The internet lost its collective mind when Lego announced a collaboration to replicate its classic handheld device earlier in the year. In a new update, Lego has confirmed that its brick-laden Game Boy will launch on 1 October for $99.99 in Australia.
To be honest, that’s cheaper than what I was expecting. I may not be the best reference point for Lego pricing, basing my assumption on the much larger Nintendo Entertainment System set from 2020. That cost $349.99 for a 2,646-piece set, compared to the Game Boy’s 421 pieces.
On a per-piece ratio, the NES wins out at roughly 13 cents per piece, while the Game Boy works out to be nearly 24 cents a piece. Still, as far as nice display items go, I’d happily shell out $99 for an authentic-looking Game Boy made of Lego.
Described as a “near 1:1” scale replica, the Lego Game Boy also comes with replica Game Paks of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Super Mario Land. You can also swap out the lenticular screen with one of three options: the start-up screen, or a still based on one of the replica games.
It’s available to pre-order now via Lego’s website for $99.99 if you’re keen to grab it ready for October.
