Alongside a suite of new Pixel 10 phones, Google also announced the Pixel Buds 2a overnight, adding more pro-level features to its cheaper earbuds.
Previously exclusive to Google’s pricier Pro buds, the Pixel Buds 2a get active noise cancellation, adding to the in-ear headphones’ smaller and lighter design.
The added functionality comes at a cost: the mid-range buds cost $239 in Australia, a decent jump from the original $159 A-series model from 2021.
Google’s rebuttal to the price difference would be to point to the new earbuds’ improved internals. Equipped with the Tensor A1 chip, Google says the Pixel Buds 2a produce clearer and more detailed audio, while providing ANC on par with the brand’s first Pro Buds.
Gemini integration is another addition, letting you access the AI assistant via voice. Instead of constantly checking your phone for directions, you can ask the buds for directions, which then taps into Gemini.
Perhaps an unheralded addition is the charging case now using replaceable batteries. No more replacing the case entirely when the battery dies: just the battery. It’s a more eco-friendly solution that hopefully more headphone brands will adopt.
Google also announced an update for the Pixel Buds 2 Pro, which, alongside a new Moonstone colour, gets adaptive noise cancelling in a future software version. The update also aims to make the Gemini Live conversational AI assistant better at understanding queries in noisy environments, and you’ll be able to use head gestures to access notification summaries.
The new Buds 2 Pro colour arrives in Australia on 28 August, while the Pixel Buds 2a launch on 9 October 2025 with the Pixel Watch 4.
