When ROG and Xbox announced their collaborative handheld gaming PC in June, one thing was conspicuously absent: a price. Now, the ROG Xbox Ally has locked in the price of its two different models ahead of its October launch.
The cheaper base ROG Xbox Ally model costs $999 in Australia, while the higher-spec ‘X’ model comes with a local price tag of $1,599. That puts the entry-level model at a cheaper starting point than the original ROG Ally, while the more premium edition costs the same as the subsequent ROG Ally X.
ROG’s third suite of handheld gaming PCs, the Xbox integration is meant to reduce the friction of using Windows on a device dedicated to gaming. A $999 model also closes the gap with Valve’s Steam Deck, which first launched in Australia last year, ranging between $649 and $1,049 price points.
There are a few differences between the two upcoming models, mainly concerning the internals. Both physically look the same, albeit with one in white and the other in black.
The standard ROG Xbox Ally includes the AMD Ryzen Z2 A chipset, 16GB of LPDDR5 memory, a 512GB SSD, and a 60WHr battery. Compare that with the ROG Xbox Ally X, which uses the more powerful AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip, 24GB of memory, a 1TB SSD, and a larger 80WHr battery. This pricier model also houses a USB 4 port among its two USB-C connectors, unlike the cheaper model’s two USB 3.2 ports.
Xbox and ROG must be expecting the cheaper model to be the most popular option, stocking it in a far wider range of retailers, including EB Games and Big W. Meanwhile, only JB Hi-Fi will stock the $1,599 ROG Xbox Ally X alongside the Asus online store.
Pre-orders are live now, with the ROG Xbox Ally set to launch on 16 October.
